Book Recs for Down Syndrome Awareness Month [VIDEO]

October is National Down Syndrome Awareness Month!

At Frazer Center, we recognize and honor our participants with Down syndrome for the unique gifts they bring to our community.

As CEO DeAnna Julian says, “When given the right support and opportunities, people with Down syndrome succeed in education, careers, build meaningful relationships, and lead fulfilling lives.”

To celebrate people with Down syndrome this month, two of our staff members—Inclusion Specialist Ignacio Mendoza, and Director of Marketing and Communications Dina Shadwell—share two books that help educate the reader about living with Down syndrome.

“By educating, advocating, and welcoming inclusion,” says DeAnna, “we break down barriers and help shape a community of greater respect, possibility, and shared success.”

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • The Ups and Downs of a Very Special Superhero by Melissa Brown, illustrated by Madeleine Harvey. Appropriate for all readers, especially elementary school ages.
  • Down Syndrome Out Loud by Melissa Hart, illustrated by María Perera. Appropriate for young adults, adults, parents, teachers, anyone who wants to know more about people living out loud with Down syndrome.
