Zandy was born with a congenital defect known as Fibular Hemimelia. This means that she was born without a fibula and a shortened, bowed tibia. In order for her to be able to walk both her legs would have to be amputated below the knees. Shortly after she was born, developmental delays became evident due to her birth defect. She also developed a minor throat issue that required surgery at three months old. In December of 2015 surgery was performed on her legs at Shriner’s Hospital in Greenville, SC, and she was fitted for prosthetics. She received her first set of legs in April of this year. She started attending the Frazer Center that same month.

Zandy loves arriving at school to greet everything and everyone (including the birds and fish)! Her desire to keep up with her classmates led to her walking at school before she was walking at home. Zandy is experiencing the awesomeness of learning that every child should be afforded – regardless of ability or special need. She’s laughing, exploring, playing, and growing. She’s making friends and teaching them new things. Research has shown children of all abilities benefit from a high-quality early education.
